Ahtna Environmental, Inc., (Ahtna) was contracted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Alaska District to perform bulk fuel storage tank repairs at Eielson Air Force Base (AFB). Existing fuel tanks were aging and/or out of specification with current API design requirements and code. Ahtna upgraded seven of the tanks by modifying existing piping and valving systems. We also re-coated the interior and exterior of each tank.
AEI’s in-house craft labor team assembled a floating pan inside of Eielson’s largest fuel storage tank (roughly 2 million gallons) to confine the fuel volatiles to the base of the tank. This tank is highly critical for the operations of the airfield at Eielson. Our work required close coordination with AFB officials to ensure that the work was completed to the specific needs and preferences of the facility users. Ahtna also worked with the designers to make improvements to the project design as needed to meet all current and future code requirements.
Ahtna’s self-performance included supplying onsite supervision, coordination with the design team, and providing most of the craft labor.
